What Are They Really Saying?

When you are reading or consuming any type of media, it is helpful to always ask these two questions: 1. What are they saying? And 2. What are they “saying” about what they are saying? One would do well to practice these thoughts even in reading the message behind the blog post. For instance, when you watch a car commercial on TV, what are they actually saying? At first glance, one would say they are trying to convince me to buy a car. But if you ask the previous two questions a few more times and dig a little deeper. They are actually saying, “You are a failed human being and you are worthless. However, if you purchase this car, you will be successful, accomplished and well-liked by other people because they will be envious that we have this amazon car and they don’t.” And once you get that car, you can drive home, sit in your chair, turn and the TV and be satisfied with your life. Until you see the next car commercial.
