All too often, people conflate Politics with their Morals. Yes, I know they are intertwined at some level. And the great debate will never be settled in deciding how much they are actually intertwined.
“Morality cannot be legislated, but behavior can be regulated.” – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The above quote and concept is true. However, the very definition of the word “intertwined” reveals they are two separate cords. There is nothing wrong with said cords being intertwined and there is nothing wrong with holding one cord by itself. Even greater wisdom lies in knowing when hold them as one and when to hold each separate. So, why do people rarely separate them? Because it is hard. It hakes time, dedication, hard work and most costly of all, admitting you may be wrong in adhering to some believe, law or moral that you have held for a long time. To separate your politics from your morals takes a lot of time of looking in the mirror and focusing on self-reflection. But leaders must do hard things to help others. For instance, there are many things that are “legal” that I believe are immoral. In many cases, even if I disagree with your morality, I will fight to the death for your right to do it.
